Let g be the number of gold pieces, s the number of silver pieces, and c the number of copper pieces.
The first two clues can be translated to 5g – s = 12 and 5s – c = 17.
g must be at least 3 since an amount is subtracted from 5g to get 12.
There are four gold pieces, eight silver pieces, and twenty-three copper pieces. (Crying out “And it is all mine!” is optional.)
