To minimise the travel distance, Sue must live in the middle house. This gives a total travel distance of six. If she lived at an end of the block, the distance would be ten; if in either of the two remaining houses, the distance would be seven.
Bob must live in the second or fourth house (counting from the west). If he lives in the second, then Allison must live in the first and then Tom in the fourth which has two boys living next to Sue. Therefore, Bob lives in the fourth.
To avoid having two boys living next to Sue, Tom must live in the first house since he lives west of Beth. Allison lives in the second house, and Beth lives in the fifth.
From west to east, the order is Tom, Allison, Sue, Bob, and Beth.
