|Spoiler Inside: Solution to Puzzle||SelectShow>|
Let a, b, c, e, and j be the textbook costs.
c must be divisible by 6 because of the four-thirds and the English-Japanese factor of 2. e thus must be divisible by 3. If you can program, iterate e from 0 up by 3, iterate a from 0 up by 1 to a maximum of 50 which will generate maximum numbers not much more than the 300’s.
Or short-cut by selecting values that will work out in or near the 300’s. With some experimentation, you will find the solution of a = 48, b = 73, c = 96, e = 36, and j = 72.
Textbook costs: Accounting: $48, Biology: $73, Computing Science: $96, English: $36, and Japanese: $72. Total: $325.
